The city of Los Angeles is famous for its sunny beaches, beautiful people, and famous movie stars. But did you know that it also has some of the greatest ski resorts in the world?
Not only do the city’s ski resorts offer great fun with amazing views, the snow there keeps on changing and improving due to the amazing Californian weather. So, if you’re looking for a place to ski near Los Angeles, then keep reading! We’ve got some great news for you.
One of the most famous and historic ski resorts in Southern California, Magic Mountain was the first major ski resort in the area and is still one of the largest. Located in the San Bernardino Mountains not far from downtown Los Angeles, it features magnificent red and orange rock formations and beautiful chaparral vegetation. While it is definitely a charming and nostalgic place, the slopes here are a bit steeper and narrower than at other nearby resorts. Nonetheless, this is still one of the best places in the area if you’re a fan of small and winding trails.
Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Somewhere Over the Rainbow is another iconic California ski resort, located in the glorious southern part of the state. It is probably the most famous resort among Disney fans and it’s not hard to see why. The snow-covered landscapes are breathtaking, the views of the surrounding area when the sky is clear and the air is crisp are indescribable. If you’ve ever seen a Disney movie set in an Old America-style town, then you know exactly what we’re talking about.
The slopes at Somewhere Over the Rainbow are quite modest, there are only a few chairlift tickets available and the longest run is only 1.9km, so not very ambitious. But the experience of skiing in such an iconic place is unforgettable and it will leave a mark on your heart.
Ski California is located in northern California, in the magnificent Sacramento region. This is the largest ski resort in the country and it features some of the steepest and longest slopes in the world. Not only that, but it also hosts the prestigious Winter Olympics every year. The resort is huge and it covers almost all the major mountain ranges, including the Sierra Nevada, the mighty Cascade, and the Trans-Sierra. There are also a number of smaller resorts located within the area. Even though we’re already pretty high up in the States, the ski season in California starts early and it ends late, so make sure you fit in some skiing in between your gigs and tours!
The runs at Ski California are amazing and some of them are breathtaking, but also a little dangerous. The massive size of the resort and the popularity of the place mean that the snow park, the biggest wooden roller coaster in the world, is often overcrowded. While we’re sure that every skier and snowboarder here is having fun, it’s important to remember that sometimes accidents do happen.
Big Bear Mountain
If you’ve ever been to California, then you probably know all about Big Bear Mountain. This is the largest and most famous ski resort in the southern half of the state. It’s a bucket-list destination for any skier and it even has a chairlift that is designated as one of the original eight passes of the original Swiss Army Knife, the Zermatt International Ski Club. So, it’s pretty obvious why this place is famous – it’s freaking HUGE!
The mountain itself towers over 14,000ft and there are a total of 22 mountains, including 12 peaks that rise over 8,000ft. There are amazing panoramic views of the entire area, including the majestic Canadian Rockies along the border with Canada. There are a whole lot of trails here and if you’re looking for a place to explore, then Big Bear Mountain is the place to be. Due to the altitude, the snow stays on for a lot longer and the skiing experience here is totally unique. It’s not often that you find such a large and varied range of trails packed into one resort, making for some exciting riding opportunities. So, if you’ve never been to California and you’re considering a trip this winter, then Big Bear Mountain is a must-visit.
Shaun White’s Run
Shaun White is one of the greatest snowboarders of all time and he’s also the one-man-band behind the White project, a clothing brand dedicated to snowboarding and board sports. If you’ve never heard of White, then we’ve got some bad news for you: this is probably the only place on this list that you’re not going to want to go to. But, nonetheless, we’ve saved the best news for last.
White is now part of an elite group of snowboarders who have been featured in snowboarding movies, including the Backcountry series and the Supertrail series. The list of places that he has visited throughout his career reads like a who’s who of snowboarding’s biggest names, including Whistler, Val D’Isere, and Tignes. So if you’re a fan of snowboarding and you want to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest ever, then White’s Run is the place for you.
