The snow is just beginning to settle in the Poconos and the resorts are getting quieter as the last of the skiers and snowboarders leave the slopes. The ski season in North America usually starts in the Southern States around mid-March and gradually moves north. The last few weeks of February and the first few weeks of March are usually the busiest times at the resorts as skiers from the Southern States try to make the most of the unseasonably mild temperatures.
In the Northern States, the winter sports season starts in the late Fall and continues through the Winter and into the Spring. The temperatures in the Northern States remain generally below freezing and provide the perfect winter environment for snow sports. In fact, some of the biggest and most popular resorts are located in the Northern States such as Vermont, New York and Pennsylvania.
Checking The Snow Reports
Even though you may have seen some snow already, it’s still early in the season and the weather may change. One of the best things that people in the North can do is to check the snow reports before they go skiing or snowboarding. The snow reports for the major resorts will give you an idea of what awaits you on your trip to the mountains this winter.
Looking at the snow reports is also a good idea if you are traveling in the area during the off season when the resorts are quieter and the conditions may be better. If you’re looking for some excitement, the peak season is usually best avoided as conditions can be extremely harsh and the resorts will be crowded. It’s also a good idea to check the weather reports before you go as the temperatures in the North can be fluctuating and sudden changes are always a possibility.
Skiing During Off-Peak Seasons
If you’re looking to get away from the crowded slopes, there are some places that you can go skiing during the off-peak season. Traveling during the off-peak season can be a smart move as the resorts may be at their quietest and you can guarantee that you’ll have the terrace all to yourself. As a general rule, traveling during the off-peak season is best avoided as conditions can be unpredictable.
When To Visit The Poconos
The best time to visit the Poconos is in the Spring or the Fall. The temperatures are generally mild and pleasant in the Spring and beautiful in the Fall. The foliage is at its best in the Fall creating some of the most spectacular landscapes. The only drawback is that the Spring months are generally wet and pleasant while the Fall can get very chilly. It’s a good idea to schedule your trip during the Spring if you want to take advantage of the best weather conditions.
On the other hand, the Fall is a great time to visit the Poconos as the temperatures are generally mild and pleasant. The scenery is beautiful and there are plenty of activities available. One of the most popular activities is the pumpkin-spice tasting at local farms and orchards. Another great thing to do is to walk through the many quaint towns of Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
What To Bring
When traveling to the Poconos, you’ll need a list of necessary items. This list will depend on what you plan on doing during your trip but it will generally include things such as ski equipment, snowboard equipment, skis/snowboard bindings, sunblock, water bottle, hat, gloves and snacks. Remember, there are no shops on the trail so you will need to bring all of the items mentioned above with you. Some places also require you to check your ski equipment before you enter so make sure you are prepared for this.
When flying into the region, you’ll be landing at the Lehigh Valley International Airport in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. From here, it’s only a 20-minute drive to the center of Allentown where you can find the hotels and restaurants that line State Street. This is where you’ll find the shops, galleries and museums that make up the city’s historic district. On a clear day, you can see the city skyline from here. It’s worth a walk to the center of Allentown to take a look at the old schoolhouses that line the streets. These schoolhouses were built in the late 1800s and were used until 1957 when the schools were closed due to a lack of students.
To get to the slopes, you’ll need a car, taxi or shuttle service. If you’re staying at a hotel, they will most likely provide you with a ski pass for the weekend. If you’re staying at a lodge, you’ll have to purchase a ski pass at the ski shop. Remember to look at the dates before you visit the Poconos so that you can plan your travel accordingly.
