There are some damages that just cannot be fixed. No matter how much you try, there will always be that one vital part that just won’t work no matter what you do. It’s a bit like trying to plug a leaky pipe with your fingers: no matter how much you do, there will always be more water coming in (and worse, you’ll eventually get wet).
When it comes to our favorite sport, skiing, there are a few things that you just cannot do. One of them is “repairing” or “mending” your ski boots. This is due to the fact that the materials used to make them, including cork, are not easily obtained (and maybe even difficult to find the right places). Another thing that you cannot repair easily is your core shot. Now, you can always choose to replace it, but that is a serious investment. Furthermore, most of us don’t have the money lying around to make such an investment. So what do you do when your core shot finally gives up and you have to go home?
Well, you could certainly take it back to the shop to get it fixed. However, the chances are that you will have to hike a lot in the process (if it is far away) and that is something that you just don’t want to do. Instead, you have a couple of options. The first one is easy enough: patch it up yourself! All you need is some duct tape and some spit to make the job easier. You will also need a sewing kit to fix the hole properly (if you are really determined).
For those prone to accidents, you could always choose to replace the whole thing (if it is really damaged). This is a costly option, not just because of the price of the new core shot, but also because you will need to invest in other pieces of safety equipment as well (such as a helmet and a pair of goggles).
No matter what, it’s a permanent mark that will stay with you for the rest of your life. So what kind of materials did you use in the first place? Was it wax or griphon or silicone?
All of these are good materials, but they also have their drawbacks. For instance, on the one hand, silicone is a very soft material and very flexible. This means that it is practically undetectable by X-ray and there is no way that it will ever be harmful. On the other hand, wax is a good all-around material used for a variety of purposes, especially for children. It is very shock-absorbent and it helps to improve your overall balance. However, as with any other material, there are limits as to what you can do with it. For example, you cannot use it if you are skiing in icy conditions because it will get permanently frozen and you will not be able to remove it easily (otherwise, it will just break off).

The Duct Tape Option
Sometimes, accidents just happen and there is nothing that you can do about it. This is why it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. One good option is to be carrying around some duct tape (the black kind, not the industrial-strength kind used in construction). If you do get injured while skiing but cannot afford a new pair of boots, you can simply tape up the damaged area until you reach a safer place. Before long, you will be enjoying a freshly waxed ski run with no traces of duct tape on your jacket.
Even better, you can use duct tape to repair small tears or holes in your ski boots. Smaller holes can be easily taped up (especially if they are on the inside), but if they are on the outside, it is best to take it to the shop to be fixed. If the boots are in good condition, this will not be an issue, but if they are old and worn out, you can bet that there will be many!
The Glued-On Patch Option
Glued-on patches are another great way to temporarily fix your core shot. Basically, you will need to remove the old core shot, clean the area around it, and apply some kind of patch (preferably waterproof). Once that is done, you can put the boot back on and continue your skiing adventure. You will not be able to tell that the boot is not in its original, fresh state (otherwise, it will simply fall off after a while).
If you do get seriously injured while skiing and need to be taken to the hospital, you can try to remove the boot (it is easier if it is glued on) and crawl on your hands and knees to the ski rack. Once there, you can remove the rest of your gear (including your helmet and goggles) and leave the hospital in peace, knowing that you have a fully functional ski boot on your feet. This is what keeps your legs intact and allows you to continue your adventurous spirit. If you do this often enough, you could very well become an expert at removing a boot that is stuck on your foot (after all, you will have to do it many times in your lifetime).
An Explosion-Proof Solution
If you are prone to accidents, you should also be prepared for the possibility of an explosion. This can happen for a variety of reasons, not just because you have a faulty charge in your boiler (as in the old days when people used to make their home heating apparatus explode on purpose). Fortunately, modern science has provided us with an explosion-proof solution: the gas mask. This is what we call a “full-face gas mask” and it was originally designed to protect service members from chemical attacks during war. Now, you can purchase a similar piece of equipment and use it for skiing as well.
It is important to note here that not all gas masks are created equal. First of all, you must be sure that it is an approved model (for example, the M79 grenade launcher). Furthermore, you need to make sure that it is equipped with a filter. A lot of the cheaper models do not have these additional parts and it is almost certain that you will end up with an unpleasant surprise if you try to use one during a ski adventure. This could lead to serious injury or even death (especially if you are not prepared for it).
Another important thing to keep in mind is that, even though it was originally designed for military use, this type of gas mask is highly recommended for adults as well. This is because it was designed with the input of actual skiers who participated in the research phase of the project. This type of mask is also equipped with a HEPA filter, which stands for “Highly Efficient Particulate Accumulator Filter.” This is an extremely effective filter that is capable of trapping 98% of the particles as small as 0.3 micrometers and removing them from the air.
The final piece of safety equipment that you need in addition to the gas mask is a helmet. This is because, as already stated, accidents can happen for a variety of reasons and it is not always obvious what will happen next. This is why it is always better to be safe than sorry and, thus, you should always wear a helmet while skiing. You cannot have too much safety equipment, especially if you want to stay alive!
Of course, you cannot be protected from every risk out there. This is why we always advise against any kind of risky behavior and, in particular, against skiing during rough weather conditions. In addition, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a functioning pair of skis. If you know what you are doing and you take the necessary precautions, you will be able to enjoy the thrilling experience that is skiing without any worries. No matter what happens, at least you will be able to look back and know that you did everything you could to prevent it.
