Everyone likes to hit the slopes in the winter, but few people like to be the one carrying the ski poles.
On a cold day, the last thing you want to be doing is pulling on those long, heavy poles. You’d rather be wearing long johns, skiing down a gentle slope, than sweating in a cold garage, cutting poles to length.
Of course, there are other ways to enjoy a good workout in the winter, too. You could get a snowboard, become a professional ski jumper, or make it a family day and take the kids on an indoor sledging party.
But, truth be told, if you’re looking for a way to work out in the winter, there’s nothing quite like skiing to get you there and back again.

The Traditional Way
Nowadays, most people opt to use a pair of golf clubs for cutting their ski poles. It’s a convenient and reliable way to go about it. You can purchase a set of these clubs for around $20 at any golf shop. Then, all you need to do is take the handle of one of the clubs and bend it back and forth until it breaks off at the end.
This method has been around for a very long time and it still represents the majority of ski pole cutting techniques. The reason for this is quite simple: it works. It is quick, easy, and most importantly, it’s reliable. You won’t end up with a broken pole if you follow the instructions. Plus, you don’t need to be particularly strong to pull it off.
The danger with this method, however, is that it requires a lot of practice to become proficient at. You can never get truly good at it, no matter how long you do it. Also, because the technique is so outdated, it doesn’t allow you to go above and beyond what you are capable of in terms of strenght. Finally, this method is pretty inefficient. You’re not using your full body when pulling on the pole, which could lead to injuries.
The Electric Way
If the abovementioned method doesn’t float your boat, then perhaps a more up-to-date technique might. This approach is, once again, a product of modern technology, but it relies on a lot more sophisticated tools to carry it out effectively. The basic idea behind this alternative method is to cut your ski pole using an electric saw or a band saw – devices that are often found in home-improvement stores. These tools make the process much easier and more enjoyable. They also allow you to achieve much higher quality cuts. Furthermore, you can make the process quieter and less stressful, as well as safer (no noisy garage or housemates sleeping over).
A good pair of headphones and a pair of powered speakers might also be a good investment here. You could listen to some nice Christmas music while you work, which could make the time go by much quicker. And, at the end of the day, you’ll have a much nicer, smoother pole than you could cut with any other device. Finally, you should know that these tools are quite expensive. Even a cheap, entry-level model will set you back at least a couple of hundred dollars.
The downside to this approach, as you might imagine, is that you’ll need a power outlet to use these tools. If you have electric power at all, which is likely not the case in most garages, then the location of the outlet will be critical. In addition, this technique is somewhat slower and more difficult than the previous one. You’ll be doing more work but won’t be able to monitor the progress of the cut as easily. Also, because you’ll be working close to the metal, you run the risk of burning yourself should the pole end up melting due to overheating.
A Hybrid Approach
If you’d like to have the best of both worlds, then you might want to try out this hybrid approach. Using either one of the two previous methods as a blueprint, you could come up with a simple yet highly effective solution. What this technique does is utilize an electric saw to make the initial cut, after which you’ll use either a smaller or larger diameter hammer to finish the job. The advantage to this approach is that you get the benefit of an electric saw for making the initial cut, plus the advantage of a smaller, more manageable hammer for the rest of the process. This is a very cost-effective solution. Plus, it’s the most efficient method of cutting, in terms of both time and energy consumption. It’s also the safest (no overhead electrical usage).
The disadvantage to this approach, however, is that you can’t control the angle at which the saw slices the metal. This can make it very difficult to achieve the desired shape or smoothness of the end product. Furthermore, because you’re using two separate tools, you’ll have to ensure that they’re both functioning correctly. Should either one stop working, you’ll have to start over again. Finally, this method takes a lot of space. You need room to swing the smaller hammer and you need space to store the electric saw and the larger hammer when you’re not using them.
Which One to Choose?
As you can see above, there are several methods of cutting ski poles. Each one has its perks and its downsides. Truth be told, it’s not possible to find one single best approach to cutting ski poles. It all depends on your needs, the type of activity you enjoy doing most, and the space available. If you have the room, then why not try out all three approaches? Or, if you feel that one of the abovementioned methods is the best fit for your situation, then choose that one and stick with it. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is that you choose a method that you’re comfortable with and that you can practice with (no fear of hurting yourself or causing damage to your garage or house).
