Chamonix is a Swiss village situated in the Alps, above the city of Grenoble, which is in turn situated in the French Alps. The ski resort is actually made up of two separate areas; Le Chamonix and Argentière. Together, they form a small European skiing hub and are connected by the famous gondola lift, which is one of the first things that you will encounter when you arrive at the resort. The majority of the resort’s hotels and restaurants are clustered in the centre of the village, with the remainder spread out around the edges. It is a busy location, with people either walking or skiing to work and eat out. That is likely to be the case for the rest of the year as well, as Chamonix is one of the largest ski resorts in Europe. The snow typically stays on for a good portion of the year, which provides a steady base for the skiers and snowboarders.
The 2018 Open Ski Season
This year was yet another successful one for Chamonix, as the resort managed to keep the snow on the ground for much of the year. This was helped by an above-average snowfall, which produced a whopping 66 inches of fresh powder. This was slightly more than the previous record-breaking year, which was itself an all-time high. This is a truly extraordinary feat considering the fact that Chamonix is one of the highest-altitude resorts in the world. The temperatures are harsh too, with top layers of snow often being as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit (which can drop to as low as 12 degrees Fahrenheit at night), and the altitude playing a role too. It is no wonder that the majority of the snow stays on for the entire year, adding to the magic of the village.
The snow is just one aspect of Chamonix, as the resort is also renowned for its incredible views, cool temperatures, and stunning nature. The village is actually built around a lake, giving you the rare treat of watching the sun rise over the mountains as you wake up in the morning. The sub-alpine forests of the Alps in summer are a stunning sight to behold too, with the vibrant green covering the hills appearing almost surreal against the white snow.
Last year was a landmark one for Chamonix, as for the first time ever, the village saw more people on holiday than working there. This is largely thanks to the fact that the village’s biggest employer, the Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), started running direct flights to Paris from Geneva in June. That direct connection has undoubtedly helped to boost the popularity of the French capital, and of Chamonix, nearby. The village’s hotels and restaurants managed to keep up with the ever-growing demands, welcoming more and more people every day.
What Lies Ahead?
This year is set to be even more successful for Chamonix, as the resort continues to prosper and grow. The village is expanding at a rapid rate, welcoming new restaurants and hotels, as well as offering incredible skiing and snowboarding. The buzz in the village is that 2018 will be the best year yet for the resort. There are plenty of reasons to back up that claim.
